How to use
Hard water and solid soap: less lather, more residue?
If the soap lathers differently at home than on vacation, it might be the water. This will help you classify the differences.
Same soap, different washbasin, different feeling? Water composition is not the same everywhere. Calcium and magnesium in particular play a role in water hardness.
What you notice at the washbasin
Soap can form poorly soluble compounds with these minerals, often called soap scum. These appear as a film on the soap dish or the basin. At the same time, the bar may lather less easily.
This does not automatically mean that the soap has gone bad. And more lather is not in itself proof of better cleaning.
What helps in everyday life
Lather the bar in your wet hands first and rinse thoroughly. Clean your soap dish and washbasin regularly with an agent suitable for the surface. Follow the instructions. Acidic cleaners can, for example, attack sensitive natural stone.
You can find out how hard your tap water is from your local water supplier. This is more helpful than guessing the hardness based solely on the amount of lather.
Look closer when washing hair
Residues can also become noticeable in your hair. An acidic rinse is often recommended, but it is not a blanket solution for every scalp and every product. Stick to specific application instructions instead of experimenting with concentrated vinegar or lemon juice.
Sometimes a different cleaning method is better suited to your water and your daily routine. The knowledge library also explains the difference between hair soap and solid shampoo.
