Essential oils, perfume, or fragrance-free: which soap do you want?
Naturally scented is not automatically better tolerated. Find out what to look for on fragrance labels and what fragrance-free really means.
Some love lavender, others prefer no added scent at all. Both are understandable preferences. When choosing, it helps not to confuse scent with skin compatibility.
Essential oils
Essential oils are complex mixtures of volatile plant components. They give soap a scent, but can also contain substances that cause allergic reactions in some people. Natural is therefore no guarantee that every skin type will tolerate them.
What perfume means
Perfume refers to a mixture of fragrance substances. The name alone does not indicate whether the components are exclusively synthetic or of natural origin. Depending on the concentration, certain substances must be listed individually, such as limonene or linalool. These can also originate from essential oils.
Fragrance-free does not mean odorless
A product without added fragrances may smell like its base ingredients. This is different from a deliberately perfumed soap. Do not rely solely on the color or an inconspicuous product name, but read the label.
If you are shopping for someone who avoids scents, it is better to ask about their exact preferences. In the case of a known fragrance allergy, the full list of ingredients and, if necessary, professional advice are what matter. A nice scent is not a skincare recommendation.
